Tendinopathy – Diagnosis and Treatment

Tendinopathy, commonly known as tendinitis, refers to a diseased or degenerative tendon, often resulting from overuse. Tendinopathy can be acute (tenosynovitis) or chronic (tendinosis) in nature, and it can have a range of underlying causes.

Like Osteoarthritis, Tendinopathy may require various treatments. Make an appointment at Specialist Sportscare W.A.’s Floreat rooms today and we can determine a treatment plan for you.

 Symptoms of Tendinopathy

Tendons are connective tissues that link our muscles and bones in all areas of our bodies, including our knees, ankles and shoulders. Tendinopathy refers to an injured tendon, which is often characterised by:

  • Pain in the affected areas
  • Joint stiffness
  • Loss of strength
  • Inflammation, swelling or tenderness around the joint

Achilles Tendinopathy is one of the most common forms of Tendinopathy. It refers to an injury to the Achilles tendon, a large tendon at the back of the ankle. The team at Specialist Sportscare W.A. can provide a formal diagnosis in a physical examination.

Tendinitis Treatment and Causes

Tendon injuries usually occur due to a combination of wear and tear, and overuse. Repetitive activities, such as running or even using the computer, prevent your tendons from healing and lead to injuries in the wrist, elbow, knee, ankle and other areas.

When you are suffering from Tendinopathy, it’s important to rest the affected area and use ice to combat pain and swelling. In some cases, Tendinopathy can last for months. It is important to allow your tendon injury to heal and follow your specialist’s advice in order to avoid further damage.

The team at Specialist Sportscare W.A. can provide a range of treatments for Tendinopathy, including:

  • Steroid iontophoresis treatment
  • Autologous tenocyte implantation

We also provide physiotherapy and exercise programmes that support the clinical management of Tendinopathy, and will help you return to full function.
