Osteoarthritis Treatment and Causes
Osteoarthritis (OA) can be a very painful and debilitating disease if it goes undiagnosed or untreated. It is very rarely a “quick fix” issue and may require a combination of different treatment strategies to obtain the best results. This is where Specialist Sportscare W.A.’s greatest strength lies.
Our holistic approach our osteoarthritis treatment sees our specialists work closely with you to determine the best options to minimise your pain and maximise your muscle strength.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis affects the joints in your body, impacting on the bone, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. It can affect people of all ages but most commonly occurs in the older community.
While the symptoms of OA can vary, you may be suffering from osteoarthritis if you experience any of the following:
- Pain and tenderness in your joints
- Stiff joints
- ‘Grating’ or ‘clicking’ joints
- Loss of movement
- Loss of flexibility
- Difficulty climbing stairs
- Difficulty doing everyday chores, such as opening jars
- The development of bone spurs around the affected joints
Osteoarthritis Causes and Risk Factors
While the exact causes of Osteoarthritis are not completely understood, research suggests that several risk factors may predispose you to OA. These include:
- Being overweight
- A history of knee or hip injuries
- A history of jobs that involved kneeling, climbing or squatting (for OA of the knee)
- A history of jobs that involved lifting heaving loads (for OA of the hips)
- A family history of Osteoarthritis
